This fine example of an
aberration of Papilio multicaudata, was
submitted by an American collector.
The colour change may in fact have been caused by "Melanism" which
is due to a sudden temperature variation during the butterfly's pupal stage. Or it may have been caused by a prolonged dry period, or it may
in fact have been caused by a deformity in some of it's genes that control
colour. Whatever the cause it is an unusual specimen. |
